Embracing Your Singledom

Being single should not be viewed as an obstacle that needs to be overcome. It’s an opportunity to do some powerful introspective work on who you are and who you want to be without the influence of well-meaning partners or friends. Being single is not the same as being alone.

The loneliest I’ve ever been, was while in the wrong relationship.

The 2016 Canadian Census published that for the first time ever, single person households surpassed all other forms of living situations. They accounted for over 28 percent of all households. So, singles are a trending force!

I won’t lie. It was a little scary the first time I travelled alone. The “what ifs” added up and friends “cautionary tales” did little to boost my confidence but in the end, I overcame my trepidations and had an amazing time.

I learned to rely on myself. I learned to trust my instincts and resilience. I learned that delayed flights and missed connections were not deal-breakers but in fact opportunities to new unforeseen adventures. I ate what I wanted, when I wanted. I walked as far as I wanted. If the museum was closed once I got there, well who cared? I didn’t ruin anyone else’s day. Some days I did nothing at all and simply lived in the moment.

In the past while travelling with friends or lovers, the travel was often based on their budgets and expectations. When travelling with a group of friends we all tend to act our “role”. There’s the “organizer”, the “party-er”, the “shopper” and the whole trip revolves around preconceived behaviours. Being somewhere where no one knows you allows you to break through your own pre-determined barriers and indulge and explore in being true to yourself. And let’s face it. When you’re being your true authentic self you’re more likely to attract the right person!

So, let’s start with the young professional looking for a quick break in a busy schedule. You love bottle service in Vegas, high end restaurants, chic accommodations and fantastic nightlife. Look no further than Breathless Resorts. Four fabulous beachfront options await Adults only and unlimited all-inclusive luxury. Top trending entertainment and sophisticated ambiance make this getaway perfect for singles looking to mix, mingle and rejuvenate before heading back to the real world.

Now for those looking for something further afield and more experiential. G Adventures is my personal favorite for small group immersive travel. A Canadian company with a deep ethical bond towards sustainable tourism, G Adventures offers options for every continent and level of travel comfort. The same sex share program allows singles to travel at no extra charge. Travel styles appeal to backpackers right through to luxury clientele. Transportation, accommodation and local guides. You travel alone but share the surreal with fellow like-minded travellers. Selfie sticks not required.

River cruising is still trending number one. Pricing that includes flights, meals, tours and accommodations wrapped up within an “unpack once” mentality makes for a fun and easy vacation. Avalon Waterways has recently announced that it is waiving the single supplement on select 2019 Europe and Southeast Asia River Cruises! There is a capacity-controlled aspect to this offer so early booking is essential! Like small group travel, river cruising allows the single traveller privacy yet also the inclusion of being part of something bigger.

Even ocean cruising is waking up to the growing numbers of SOLO travellers. Holland America has recently released specific single occupancy ocean view cabins. No longer relegated to the bowels of interior cabins, singles can now benefit from morning sunshine and specialized pricing.

Travelling by yourself need not cost more. Your relationship status does not dictate your ability to travel. Travelling will open you up to the world and better yet to yourself. Embrace this time in your life. You’re exactly where you are meant to be.
